Nothing, perhaps, sums up the vulgar, conspicuous excess of reality TV star Kim Kardashian West better than the fact that the £3.5 million 20-carat diamond engagement ring stolen in Paris in the early hours of Monday was not the ring with which her husband, singer Kanye West, proposed just three years ago.
No, the original ring — a £1.2 million, 15-carat flawless diamond — was usurped by an upgrade bought this summer.
It seems that in the world of Kim Kardashian a diamond is hardly for ever.
Kim, 35, showed off the two rings in an Instagram post — seen by her 84.1 million followers on the site — two weeks ago.
Apparently, she liked to wear the two rings together, one on each hand. (She perfectly co-ordinates with her three-year-old daughter North, who wears half-carat diamond earrings and has a diamond bracelet said to be worth £250,000, too.)
Good taste aside, the mother-of-two, who was robbed at gunpoint by five masked men who tied her up in the bathroom of a luxury Paris apartment in the early hours of Monday while they stole £7.8 million of jewellery, may now be reflecting that it could have been a tad unwise to show off her wealth so ostentatiously.
For Kim, a reality TV star with no discernable talent save for self-promotion, is hardly shy about sharing the details of her lavish lifestyle.
The show that made her famous, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, flaunts her wealth and numerous mansions, while her social media accounts are an orgy of thousand-pound dresses, flashy cars and outlandish parties.
At the same time, they keep her fans apprised of her every move, providing more than enough information for any enterprising thief to track her location.
Yet perhaps the saddest thing about the whole sorry affair is that people were quick to suggest the whole thing may have been a PR stunt, with many pointing out that this brutal robbery could not have come at a more opportune moment.
It raises Kim’s profile just as the next series of her reality TV show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, prepares to air. Ratings have been falling lately, reaching an all-time low in June for an episode in which her brother Rob announced his engagement to model Blac Chyna.

Some are asking if this is Kim’s most audacious publicity stunt yet — a cruel suggestion, given that she was tied up at gunpoint in what must have been an incredibly distressing attack.
Yet as the catwalk shows that Kim was attending in Paris continued yesterday (indeed, it was at these very shows that Kim had intended to wear her favourite jewels), many fashion insiders have been discussing this.
The story was picked over, with some asserting that bathrooms cannot generally be locked from the outside, so how did this happen? And many found it hard to believe that her security team was absent or overpowered.
One fashion editor told The Hollywood Reporter, a respected industry magazine: ‘I am suspicious because I don’t think anything in her life happens that she hasn’t orchestrated. Where was the TV crew?’

‘I am extremely surprised,’ he said. ‘How or why she was on her own in a foreign city with all these jewels is just bananas. I do not understand it, especially as you see her bodyguard in pictures with her every day.’
Kim is usually pictured with Pascal Duvier, her head of security.
